Meet the Bees

Beewitching Hour is a small, independent beekeeping business and art studio. Living with physical disabilities can make beekeeping difficult, so we keep our operation limited to just a few hives to ensure quality of life for us and our bees.

We also spend a great deal of time and energy supporting native bees and other pollinators.

Honeybees

Redbud Hive

The Redbud Hive was installed from a NUC in early May 2025. We named it after the native tree it sits under.

This is our strongest hive, and is doing well at our secondary apiary. They have tons of pollen and nectar sources!

Lavender Hive

The bees in this hive were caught as a feral swarm in late May 2025. We named it after the design I woodburned into the hive body.

They’re still getting established, but seem to be doing well at the apiary on our farm.

Check out our YouTube channel for a video of us catching this swarm!

Native Bees

Carpenter bees are a frequent sight at our farm. These native pollinators are powerhouses of buzz pollination (like the bumblebee!) and are a gentle giant of the pollinator world.

Bumblebees are one of the most recognizable native pollinators in Michigan. Bumblebees and other native pollinators are hundreds of times better at pollinating than European honeybees.

Solitary bees like lesser cellophane bees and miner bees are tiny and easy to miss, but they have a huge impact on local ecology. They nest in the ground, in hollow stems, and tree cavities.
